Which Loire Valley wine regions can I visit on a private tour?
We run private wine tours in Touraine (west around Chinon and Bourgueil, east around Vouvray and Cheverny), Saumur, Anjou around Angers, Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, and the Nantes vineyards near Clisson. There is also a cheese and wine day near Amboise and several tours that mix wineries with castles.
What grapes are Loire Valley wines made from?
The main varieties are Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay. You also meet local grapes such as Melon de Bourgogne, used for Muscadet near Nantes, and the rare Romorantin grown in Cour-Cheverny. The range goes from dry, sweet and sparkling whites to rosés and reds.
Do I have to drive myself between wineries?
No. Every wine tour is led by a private driver-guide who picks you up, drives between estates and explains the wines as you go. You can taste freely without worrying about the road, and the guide knows the winemakers personally, which makes the visits more relaxed.
Which Loire wine tour should I pick if I prefer red or white?
For reds, choose Western Touraine (Chinon, Bourgueil, Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil) or Saumur-Champigny, both built on Cabernet Franc. For crisp whites, Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé or Vouvray are the classics. If you like sweet wines, the Anjou tour takes in the Layon valley and Bonnezeaux. Saumur adds sparkling wine to the mix.
Can I combine wine tasting with Loire castles?
Yes. Several tours pair wineries with château visits: Amboise or Clos Lucé with a vineyard picnic and Chenonceau, or a Bourgueil winery followed by your choice of Azay-le-Rideau, Fontevraud Abbey or the Villandry gardens. Your trip designer can also add a castle to any of the wine-only days.
