Where does the cheese and wine experience take place?
In a small village a short distance from Amboise, in the Vouvray wine area. Your hosts welcome you into their troglodyte home, a dwelling carved into the hillside and surrounded by vineyards. The tasting takes place in their dedicated tasting room, and lunch is served in the garden area.
How many wines do we taste and what do we learn?
You enjoy a tutored tasting of six wines that show the range of Vouvray. Your host explains the region's geography and how to read a French wine label. At the same time you learn the main types of French cheese, how to build a balanced cheese board and how to cut each cheese properly, tasting as you go.
Is lunch included in the cheese and wine day?
Yes. After the tasting you relax in the garden with an aperitif, then sit down to a three-course lunch cooked by your hosts. It uses fresh vegetables from the neighboring garden and artisan cheeses, served with wines chosen to match. It feels like being invited to a friend's home.
Do we also visit a winery?
Yes, the afternoon continues at a local winery. You meet the winemakers, walk through the vineyards and taste a range of their wines. If you find a bottle you love, you can buy it at cellar door prices to take home.
What is a troglodyte home in the Loire Valley?
It is a house dug into the soft limestone cliffs that line the Loire and its tributaries. The stone, called tuffeau, was quarried to build châteaux, and the cavities left behind became homes, cellars and workshops. They stay cool all year, which is also why so many wineries age their wine in caves.
