Villandry castle and gardens
Château de Villandry is renowned for its magnificent gardens, spread over three levels: the ornamental vegetable garden, the ornamental gardens and the water garden. You’ll have plenty of time to stroll through the gardens, admiring the varied arrangements of topiary, colorful flowers and cascading fountains. Don’t miss the stunning Villandry castle itself, a stunning example of Renaissance architecture boasting intricately decorated rooms and panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.
Azay-le-Rideau castle
Then travel to Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, a fairytale castle that appears to be built on an island in the middle of the Indre River. Although technically a peninsula, its enchanting location surrounded by water creates an unmistakable island atmosphere. Admire its elegant Renaissance architecture and charming towers. Embark on a guided tour of the Azay-le-Rideau castle’s sumptuously decorated interior, revealing the Great Hall, the royal apartments and the king’s bedroom. Allow your guide to unlock the secrets of this romantic retreat, whispering tales of its fascinating past.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
Where did Joan of Arc meet King Charles VII in the Loire Valley?
At Chinon. The fortress above the town is where Joan of Arc convinced Charles VII to back her and lead the French army, a turning point in the Hundred Years' War. On this tour you explore Chinon's towers and ramparts with your driver-guide, who tells the story of that meeting. It is the most medieval stop of the day, after the Renaissance châteaux of Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau.
Is Azay-le-Rideau castle really built on an island?
Not quite, though it looks like it. Azay-le-Rideau stands on a peninsula surrounded by the waters of the Indre River, which gives it the feel of a castle floating on a lake. Inside, your guided visit covers the Great Hall, the royal apartments and the king's bedroom, and your guide shares the stories of this romantic Renaissance retreat.
How much time do you get at Villandry on this tour?
You have plenty of time to stroll through the gardens, laid out on three levels with a pleasure garden, a vegetable garden and an orchard, plus topiaries, flower beds and fountains. You also visit the Renaissance château itself, with its decorated rooms and views over the landscape. If gardens are your priority, ask your trip designer to give Villandry a longer slot in the day.
How is the Villandry, Azay-le-Rideau and Chinon tour different from other Loire château tours?
It leaves out Chambord and Chenonceau and focuses on the area west of Tours. The day also moves through the eras, from the Renaissance elegance of Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau to the medieval fortress of Chinon. It suits travelers who have already seen the most famous châteaux, or who care more about history and gardens than about grand royal interiors.
Can we add a wine tasting in Chinon to this tour?
The standard program does not include a winery, but Chinon is the heart of a well-known red wine appellation made from Cabernet Franc. If you would like a tasting, your trip designer can rework the day. You can also look at our Villandry and Chinon tour, which pairs the gardens with a Loire cruise and a winery visit.
